Platform Engineering

The infrastructure, tooling and developer experience that let every other engineering team move faster: CI/CD, cloud infrastructure and observability. Part of our Software Engineering discipline, we work with engineers building platform teams from early-stage startups through to production at scale.

Job Description

Platform Engineering is more than DevOps with a rebrand.

The best platform engineers think about their infrastructure as a product other engineers use, not just a set of servers to keep running. That product mindset, combined with deep infrastructure expertise, is a rarer combination than the job title suggests.

At Enigma, we screen specifically for that combination, so when a search opens up, we're not just matching a list of tools on a CV.
  • Kubernetes
  • AWS
  • Terraform
  • Observability
Many of the teams we support here are also hiring across ML Infrastructure and Web Development, so we're used to building the fuller picture of a team, not just filling a single seat.

What a Good Partnership Looks Like

We work best as a close, informed extension of your team, not a CV-forwarding service.
one
Define the Brief
Align on what "great" actually looks like, whether that's a first platform hire or a Head of Infrastructure.
two
Map the Market
Understand who's active in platform engineering right now, across cloud-native startups, DevOps-focused teams and adjacent backend engineers.
three
Focused Search
Target the right people, not more people, drawing on relationships across the cloud infrastructure and SRE community.
four
Guide the Process
Keep momentum, clarity and alignment from first call through to offer stage.
five
Deliver & Refine
Secure the hire, then refine the approach for next time so every search gets sharper.

FAQs

There's a lot of overlap and the titles are used inconsistently across companies. Broadly, we see platform engineering as building the internal product other engineers use, while DevOps and SRE often focus more narrowly on deployment pipelines and reliability. We clarify which your role actually is before we start sourcing, since candidates read these titles differently too.

We ask candidates to walk through a specific system they built or owned: what triggered building it, what trade-offs they made, and what broke. Tool lists tell us what someone has touched, not what they actually understand.

Yes, this is a common use case for our Contractor Hire and Statement of Work services, bringing in someone with deep expertise for a defined project rather than a permanent headcount.

A first platform hire is often closer to a generalist backend engineer with strong infrastructure instincts than a narrow specialist, since there isn't yet a platform team for them to be a small part of. We calibrate the search around that reality.

Meaningfully. Teams running ML workloads often need platform engineers who understand GPU scheduling, cost management at scale and observability for training jobs, not just standard web infrastructure. We coordinate across these two specialisms rather than treating them as unrelated.
